"Creating Innovation & Fun In the Work Place"

Picture

As all cultures are contributing to our industry, Black innovation is still changing our world with bold new technology.  SMG celebrates its new and diversified business and technical SMG/PRC Team to meet the challenges that we face by thinking outside of the current music industry box.

Innovation is a mindset without the cultural, philosphical, and even the theological grids by which we naturally use to expand the mental power of the masses.  Innovation does not ask the traditional, simple why;  Innovators instead asks what is the it, why this it will succeed, when to proceed, and when not to invest and create it.
"Testing every option is the key to successful innovation." JB

INNOVATORS AND MENTORS WHO IMPACTED MY LIFE AND CAREER

Don Schroeder (Poppa Don) Innovator, Mentor, and Friend

Picture
I was introduced to Poppa Don by Moses Dillard in 1967 in Pensacola, Florida.
Poppa Don needed an experience musician to replace Tommy CogBill (Bass Player). I interviewed for the job and was hired immediately.  The Rhythm Section included Moses Dillard, Clayton Ivey, Jabo, and myself. We became the new Studio Band for artists such as, James and Bobby Purify, Oscar Tony Jr., Sam McClain, and Ruby Winters. Writer/ Actor, Kris Kristofferson and I were both writing collaborators under Poppa Don's guidance. We made a lot of trips together to Nashville when we were younger in Poppa's Piper Plane to record in Nashville,TN. Poppa Don embraced me and my gifts to the extent that I was able to play bass, piano, guitar, and write for him as a part of his production team for Bell Records. He mentored me in the music industry game with much wisdom. To him  I owe a salute and much gratitude for showing me the way.

Rick Hall, Innovator, Mentor, and Friend

Picture
Sundance Film Festival 2013
Rick Hall gave me the opportunity to prove myself worthy to become a Fame Gang  Member.  As an innovator and a mentor,  he challlenged me to become more than a musician; he challenged me to write, prodcuce, and to arrange as a part of my personal growth plan at Fame. I like many others owe him  the honor and a salute for his vision to be inclusive  during a time when no one else in the South had the courage to embrace Martin Luther King's Dream. Be sure to see the movie which captures our experiences, "Muscle Shoals".

The Fame Gang Album became the signature sound of Muscle shoals after the Swampers move on and upward.  Capital records gave us the deal that would have been theirs and we made the best of it by creating a truly "Solid Gold " Album.  It became a marketing tool for Rick Hall to promote the stability of his company. The year that we became the Fame Gang Rythym Section is when Rick Hall became the Producer of  the Year. The Men that you see on this album cover played on some of the biggest hit records during our time at Fame and beyond.  Rick, Thanks for the opportunity.  Link: Fame Gang Album

Jerry Wexler Innovator, Mentor, and Friend

Picture
Jerry Wexler, another innovator and mentor,  invited me to move to Miami Florida to become a part of his new Ryhthm Section along with Dr John, Freeman Brown, and Benny Latimore. We met in Muscle Shoals during a recording session and again in Miami Florida on a Little Richard session while we were on tour. During my tenure, we were signed along with the Bee Gees, Jackie More,  Dr. John. One of the highlights of my tenure was to play on a Duke Ellington session, a major artist among many others at Atlantic Records.  As the recording band ,we created several album worthy projects that were not released, but are still in the vaults of Atlantic Records. The best thing that came out of the Atlantic Rythym Section collaboration was Dr. John's First Album.
Jerry  Wexler and Tom Dowd also taught me how to run a label and production company and how to matriculate in and around the music industry.  He glady shared his wisdom with me during the late night sessions at Critiria Studios.  To this day, I am very grateful for his friendship and loyalty to me as a musician seeking success in the music industry. RIP. Today, I stand on the shoulders of giants with great humility.  The Hits Continued...

Berry Gordy, Innovator, Mentor, and Sponsor

Picture
Bottom & Company Was Founded by Freeman Brown, John Helms, and I. Barbara Merrill, Student Affairs at TSU helped to put us on the map in the North and South Eastern Coast with College Tours… We were the first Nashville R & B Band to get a label deal with Motown/Gordy Labels, Thanks Terry Woodford and Clayton Ivey.  We released several singles and one classic album, Bottom and Company(Rock Bottom). Clayton Ivy, T. Woodford, Berry Gordy, Susan Dupass, Robert Gordy, Thelma Houston, Ed Sherman, Carl Griffin, and Stevie Wonder helped me to succeed as a song writer/artist.  All of them helped to refine my gifts and talents to the point that I am now able to  do the same for others. Thanks!

Charlie Fach, Innovator, Mentor and Friend

Picture
This is a tribute to someone who believed in me and gave me the chance to be successful. Charlie and I traveled all over the south east together promoting my records, laughing, celebrating life and family. He always had my back knowing that with my intellect and talents that one day I might follow in his footsteps as a CEO, not as an artist. But, he taught me the ways of the major label game like he was my personal YODA. A Genius and a Gentlemen. I honor you by maintaining my integrity in the music industry per your instructions.  When I met Charlie, he was just leaving Mercury as President to move to Nashville. Dillard & Boyce was the first stop that he made, and we sign a deal almost immediatelty, thanks to Pete Drake and Joel Katz.  Charlie then sign me as a solo artist based on his faith in my talents and loyalty to his then , new label, Compleat /MercuryRecords. RIP.
Mercury Records is now a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, and was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1945 by Irving Green, Berle Adams and Arthur Talmadge.

"Like My Mentors, I Am Busy Contemplating How SMG Will Work in  the Future"

Picture

As you can see, I will not be setting behind my desk.  I will be recording, collaborating and designing new technology and platforms, lecturing, playing, giving of my time to the next generation and teaching.  These are challenging times, yet exciting times for SMG.
Is your mind made up to succeed? Start your "Transition" accept your 'Transformation, and embrace your "Transcendent" life!

The essence of a tree does not keep it from being transformed into music paper.  However, as music paper it is still able to transmit a transcendent and universal musical message.  All it needs is to be played with passion.
